Thomas Tayeri, M.D.

Since he began practicing in Palo Alto in 1995, Thomas Tayeri, M.D., has earned a reputation as one of the top eye specialists in the Bay Area. As the most experienced private practice glaucoma specialist in the peninsula and south bay, he has performed thousands of glaucoma operations, including many of the latest minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) and complex cases referred to him by other subspecialists. Dr. Tayeri is an equally skilled cataract surgeon, with extensive experience performing complex operations and implanting premium intraocular lenses.

Dr. Tayeri graduated from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) medical school in 1990. After completing his ophthalmology training at Stanford, he received subspecialty training in glaucoma at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. Dr. Tayeri is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Glaucoma Society, and past president of the Peninsula Eye Society. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honors society. Dr. Tayeri was the recipient of the 2020 UCSF Campaign Alumni Awards honoring accomplished alumni.

Dr. Tayeri has been active in physician education, and has served as Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford. As a Surgical Eye Expeditions International affiliate, he has brought his expertise to the developing world by helping train local surgeons and donating his time to perform numerous sight-restoring operations. He is the founder and President of Fiat Lux Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and reversing blindness in the developing world.

 

Jessica Chen, M.D.

Jessica Chen, M.D., joined the Palo Alto Eye Group in 2012. Dr. Chen attended the University of California, Berkeley where she received her bachelors degree in Integrative Biology. She received her medical doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the medical honors society, Alpha Omega Alpha. Then she moved to Seattle to complete her residency training in Ophthalmology at the University of Washington. For subspecialty training in glaucoma, she did a clinical fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, which has been ranked annually as the number one Ophthalmology program in the nation by U.S. News and World Report consecutively since 2004.  Dr. Chen is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Chen is experienced in complex cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).  She performs premium intraocular lens implants to address presbyopia including mulitifocal and extended depth of focus lenses, and toric lenses to correct astigmatism.  She is experienced in multiple MIGS procedures such as Hydrus, iStent, goniotomy, and Xen.  She also does glaucoma laser surgery including laser peripheral iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and micropulse laser.

Dr. Chen is fluent in medical Spanish, and she has been in involved in several international medical missions to Mexico and Ecuador. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Glaucoma Society.

 

Robert Kule, M.D.

Robert Kule, M.D., joined the Palo Alto Eye Group in 2015. Dr. Kule received his bachelors degree in Materials Science and Engineering at Columbia University in New York, and was awarded membership into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. He received his medical doctorate at New York University, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society. Dr. Kule then completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at the prestigious Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. He then pursued further subspecialty training in glaucoma at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University, where he held an appointment as a member of the Adjunct Clinical Faculty.

 

Rajvi Mehta, M.D.

Rajvi Mehta, M.D., joined the Palo Alto Eye Group in 2022. Dr. Mehta attended Brown University where she received her bachelors degree in Biochemistry. She received her medical doctorate from the Duke University school of medicine. Then she moved to Chicago to complete her residency training in Ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary. For subspecialty training in glaucoma, she did a clinical fellowship at the Duke Eye Center.  Dr. Mehta is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Mehta is experienced in complex cataract surgery and glaucoma surgery, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).  She performs premium intraocular lens implants to address presbyopia including mulitifocal and extended depth of focus lenses, and toric lenses to correct astigmatism.  She is experienced in multiple MIGS procedures such as OMNI, GATT, Hydrus, iStent, Kahook dual blade goniotomy and Xen.  She also does traditional glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy, express shunt, and glaucoma tube shunt surgery) and glaucoma laser surgery including laser peripheral iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty, and micropulse laser.

Dr. Mehta was raised in Mumbai, India, and is fluent in Hindi and Gujarati. She is interested in ophthalmic innovation and global health. As an undergraduate she started a social venture to combat iron deficiency anemia in India by creating iron-rich GudNeSs bars and continued to nurture her passion for global health during medical school and residency. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American Glaucoma Society.

 

Lisa O’Connor, O.D.

Lisa O'Connor, O.D., joined the Palo Alto Eye Group in 2016. Dr. O'Connor attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where she received her bachelor's degree in Microbiology. She received her doctorate from the Southern California College of Optometry, graduating with honors, and went on to complete a residency in ocular disease and contact lens at the University of California at Berkeley School of Optometry. She is an active member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honors Society, the American Optometric Association, and the San Mateo Optometric Society.

In 2015 Dr. O'Connor was voted best eye doctor in San Francisco by Bay Area Parent readers. She is glaucoma certified and performs comprehensive eye examinations, which include a refraction (determination of glasses prescription), evaluation of binocular vision function, and screening for glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, CMV retinitis, and many other eye conditions. She also provides a comprehensive fitting of contact lenses including soft, gas-permeable, astigmatic, bifocal, tinted, and custom-designed lenses.
